Each year, the NCAA allows Division I football programs to offer up to 85 scholarships. For many, this scholarship is the foundation for their education and athletic career, a life-changing opportunity. For some, however, that opportunity takes time to come, requiring persistence, hard work, and an unwavering belief in themselves.

On TROY’s annual Fan Day, that persistence paid off for one dedicated player. Justin Poe, a returning member of the Troy football team, was about to receive life-altering news that would change the course of his journey at TROY.

For years, Poe had been a staple of dedication on and off the field. As a walk-on, he had contributed tirelessly to the team’s success, often without the same recognition given to scholarship athletes. He spent countless hours in the weight room, perfecting his skills, all while maintaining a laser focus on his academic and athletic goals.

Fan Day was meant to celebrate the team and connect with the community, but for Poe, it became so much more. During the event, head coach Jon Sumrall called him aside in front of his teammates, fans, and family to deliver the news that Poe had been awarded a full athletic scholarship.

The field erupted with applause, cheers from his teammates, and even a few tears from family members who knew the sacrifices he had made. “This is everything I’ve worked for,” Poe said with emotion. “I always believed in myself, and I’m grateful to the coaches and my teammates for supporting me.This is just the beginning.”

Tarvares Dennis, reporting for TROY Football, captured the moment, knowing it wasn’t just a story of a scholarship but of heart, hustle, and the unwavering belief that hard work truly does pay off.

Justin Poe’s journey is far from over, and this chapter at Troy will undoubtedly be one of many more victories.
